Our Favorite Places

The next couple of days were spent showing our friends our favorite local places.

We tramped Mt. Aubrey…

JoJo and I spent the day lying on Ocean Beach while Ben snorkeled and Brunner watched (Brunner was definitely the sane one, since the water was freezing)…

We tramped Mt. Manaia…

There’s a sign close to where the photos were taken that asks that no one climb any further up the mountain so as not to disturb the Maori gods. The first time Ben and I hiked the mountain, we have every intention of respecting the sign. Then, a Maori woman led us down a well-beaten path that went to the top of the mountain. I’m assuming she got permission from her gods, who in turn gave us permission. When we visited with JoJo and Brunner, the permission naturally extended to them, so Brunner and Ben climbed to the tip-top of the mountain. The gods have a beautiful view…

We also revisited the Waipu Caves. Perhaps you remember our last visit.

Northland, New Zealand

I’m happy to say that this trip was much better (and less angry) than the last. And, evidently, the camera didn’t leave my pocket, because all I have to show for it is this photo (courtesy of Brunner).

Oh, and this one which was taken outside the cave entrance (courtesy of JoJo).

Since we got to New Zealand in February, there’s been one thing that I’ve wanted to share with you that I haven’t already: the fun mailboxes. I don’t know if it’s a local thing or a cultural thing, but I have seen more neat and quirky mailboxes here than I have in all my years in the United States. Though, I’ve seen some pretty good ones in the U.S., too.

I only took photos of five mailboxes that were close to our apartment (do you know how crazy/creeper a person looks taking photos of mailboxes?), but there were many more of note. For instance, on the Tutukaka Coast I saw an almost life-size mermaid and on the way to the Whangarei airport there was a larger-than-life fish. Without further ado…

And, my personal favorite, Snow Bunny…

Someone handmade a sweater for a mailbox! That’s so awesome! The homeowners actually pulled into their driveway as I was creeping on their mailbox. I should have stopped to tell them how much I loved their mailbox.Instead, I turned and walked quickly away.
